A Graphics Processing Unit (GPU) is a specialized computer chip. GPU’s can deliver a better performance than a CPU (Central Processing Unit). It is an electronic circuit designed to rapidly manipulate and alter memory to accelerate the creation of images in a frame buffer intended for output to a display device. GPUs are used in embedded systems, mobile phones, personal computers, workstations, and game consoles. A graphics processing unit (GPU) is a computer chip that performs rapid mathematical calculations, primarily for the purpose of rendering images. In the early days of computing, the central processing unit (CPU) performed these calculations. As more graphics-intensive applications such as AutoCAD were developed, however, their demands put a strain on the CPU and degraded performance. GPUs came about as a way to offload those tasks from CPUs and free up processing power.
