Berkeley, California, October 18th, 2023 – Material startup METAseismic leads the way in the liquid immersion cooling industry to certify and accelerate seismic solutions and widescale immersion cooling adoption. In collaboration with Hypertec, a specialist in immersion cooled server design and implementation, immersion technology-based cooling system provider Submer, and green-tech hub for AI and high-performance computing Wyoming Hyperscale, METAseismic has successfully tested its novel compact and lightweight seismic protection pads for the highest level of seismic forces per NEBS GR-63 standards. The tests confirmed that the integrated system can withstand the strongest seismic event with no damage or interruption of functionality.
Seismic Certification
METAseismic, the Berkeley-based startup using AI to create metamaterials for vibration and impact control, has partnered with a top-class group of collaborators to prove that its metamaterial pads can enable IT liquid immersion cooling systems to sustain the highest levels of seismic vibrations. In partnership with Hypertec, Submer, and Wyoming Hyperscale, METAseismic obtained the seismic certification for the Zone 4 seismic input per NEBS GR-63 standards, by subjecting an integrated system to seismic vibrations reaching 1.8 g-forces in three different directions.
As experts in controlling transportation and environmental shocks and vibrations, METAseismic is pioneering a ground-breaking change in the seismic protection industry. Causing some of the highest levels of vibration on earth, ground shaking is a necessary hazard to be considered when developing hyperscale data centers. Seismic racks have been developed and certified for air-cooled IT solutions, but no certifications have been obtained so far for liquid immersion cooling systems. With this certification, METAseismic is leading the industry towards a future where immersion servers and tanks in next-gen hyperscale data centers are not only more energy-dense and efficient, but also more resilient and secure, even more secure than air-cooled systems.
The Implication of the Seismic Tests
METAseismic pads were substituted to the traditional base of a next-gen immersion tank with the immersion servers that run in it for accelerated computing. Then, using a large-scale testing facility, the protection of the components from seismic vibration was demonstrated, ensuring the highest level of protection for ITE owners. This protection applies to the servers in the tank, the tanks themselves, and ultimately to the facility tenants and owners.
“We are incredibly excited about what METAseismic represents — a new era of resilience and reliability for liquid-cooled hyperscale, immersion tanks, and valuable servers. But this is just the beginning.”
Trenton Thornock, Founder at Wyoming Hyperscale
This is an important milestone for the widespread use of this technology, as remarked by Elai Danker-Dvash, Field Engineer at Submer: “In all of our immersion cooling endeavors, resilience, and reliability are aspects that remain high on the list of priorities. The seismic certification for Zone 4 seismic input per NEBS GR-63 standard is truly a great scientific achievement for our collaborative efforts with METAseismic, Wyoming Hyperscale, and Hypertec. Ensuring optimal server performance even in the face of seismic disruptions means safeguarding investments, preventing damage, and guaranteeing uninterrupted service. This pushes immersion technology even further as a reliable data center solution.”
Patrick Scateni, Hypertec’s Vice President of Global Sales said: “Our collaboration with METASeismic and Submer highlights our ongoing commitment to innovative and sustainable solutions for data center management. Since 2021, we’ve worked closely with Submer, resulting in the development of high-density and sustainable immersion cooling solutions, specifically designed to meet the needs of digital infrastructure leaders seeking to future-proof their data centers. This collaboration with METAseismic plays a key role in advancing the testing and adoption of their seismic protection pads. Together, we are working to advance the widespread adoption of immersion cooling as the leading solution for modern data center management.“
METAseismic’s technology has been perfected in the U.S. Department of Energy’s Lawrence Berkeley National Laboratory (LBNL), with development testing funded by the National Science Foundation (NSF) and designed with a unique internal structure that absorbs and disperses energy from shocks and vibrations. This means that even in the event of an earthquake or other significant seismic disruptions, the servers within the immersion tanks remain undisturbed, maintaining their optimal performance.
METAseismic solution does not just protect the servers, as there are potential applications for individual components to protect an entire data center facility and even the individual components while they are in transit to the accelerated computing facility. By using METAseismic metamaterials, it is possible to prevent potential damage, safeguard the investment in tanks and servers, and ensure uninterrupted service. This is more than just a technological advancement. It is a commitment to provide the industry with the best, most reliable, and most innovative impact and vibration protective solutions.
“We will continue to push the boundaries, to innovate, and to create material that makes a difference in many other applications. Because at the end of the day, that is what we are all about. Making a difference. Making the world a better place with sustainably sourced materials. And METAseismic is doing just that.”
